A couple months ago, two of us had the pleasure of attending a masterclass at the Detox Market all about face serums. We tested the texture of different serums and heard about their incredible natural ingredients and their benefits. At the end, I had a list of about five different serums I would like to have in my personal collection, but walked away with the Schaf Serum, a light and firming serum that made my skin feel both clean and tight, but in a gentle way without any drying. I now use it every day and have found my skin more smooth and firm. I have since tested the entire line and love the feel of the dual night cream/eye cream which helps after long days (it’s patio season, after all) and early mornings (gotta get those workouts in!).
Clean lines (check out that beautiful packaging), minimal ingredients, actual results, developed in Ontario – what’s not to love about this skincare line? Read below for some insight into the brand’s genesis and priorities from Schaf’s founder, Peter Schafrick.
Well TO Do: Please introduce yourself to WTD readers.
Peter Schafrick: My name is Peter Schafrick, and I’m the founder of Schaf Skincare. I live in Niagara, with my architect wife, and 2 young children. We recently relocated here from Toronto in order to fulfill our goal of reducing stress in our lives, and to live a healthier, cleaner lifestyle. We love getting to know organic farmers, and the wine ain’t bad either!
WTD: What inspired you to start Schaf skincare?
PS: I was compelled to develop Schaf out of frustration of not being able to find skincare products that were both effective and safe. The products we previously used were full of toxins, but they did work fairly well. On the flip side, all-natural products we tried were free of toxins, but they didn’t work well at all. I figured there had to be a better way. On a dare from friends and family, I did some research and found a lab who was willing to work with me in creating samples I could test. And after more than a year, the chemist and I developed formulas that worked exceptionally well, but also were free of any toxins. That’s when I knew we might be on to something!
WTD: We first were introduced to Schaf after a serum masterclass at the Detox Market and it’s probably still our favourite. If you had to choose a favourite product, what would it be and why?
PS: That’s a tough question – it’s like asking me which child of mine is my favourite! I actually use all the products, but to be honest, my favourite is our flagship product, Schaf Serum. It really works well, feels great after it goes on, and the results can be seem more immediately. Also, it’s one of those products one can use for all seasons, alone in the spring and summer, or in combination with a moisturizer in fall and winter.
WTD: Was it important to have a line that was for all genders? What made you take this approach?
PS: While working with my chemist testing various formulations, they had to work really well on me. In fact, our first product was our Shave, so Schaf initially leaned towards men. Once I felt I had an effective formulation, I let my wife try them. She raved about them so we decided to go gender neutral, so our bathroom won’t be cluttered with products!
WTD: Minimalism appears to be important to you both in terms of packaging and also ingredients, and we love it. Can you tell us a little bit about the ingredients you do use and prioritize, as well as the packaging?
PS: My wife and I both have the philosophy that less is more. We enjoy things that are modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed. We put this same philosophy into Schaf, ensuring that everything from the ingredients to the packaging are kept simple.
Our priority was to ensure Schaf solved most skin problems, but we didn’t want to complicate the line with a multitude of products.
We discovered that to solve most skin problems, one needs to first get healthy skin. We wanted to develop products that worked for dry, oily and sensitive skin, so we focused on toxin-free ingredients that would heal, nurture, protect, and bring back balance to skin. We feel strongly that addressing the symptom is the wrong approach. But if you can implement a routine that results in healthy skin, the symptoms – oily, dry, redness from sensitivities, and even acne and eczema – will be dramatically improved or even be eliminated completely.
So we don’t solve oily skin with harsh cleaners, nor do we solve dry skin with heavy creams. What we do is use the best of science and nature. We use proven plant based botanicals, and combine it with oil-free hydration technology, like Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, and Marine Collagen. Together, they work to heal, nurture and return skin’s balance — resulting in healthy skin that looks good, feels good, and solves the underlying symptoms.
WTD: What’s next for you and Schaf skincare?
PS: Good question! We are currently testing a few new products, but our main goal right now is to work with our existing retailers, and also add new retailers in other cities across Canada. We love what we do, and our goal is to help both women and men restore their confidence with healthy, good looking skin – with products that look good too!
